17 June 2000, an earthquake with a magnitude of 6.6 hit Southern Iceland. This earthquake could have been caused because Iceland is sitting on a plate boundary where the North America and Eurasian plates are drifting apart.
As the earthquake had a magnitude of 6.6,some of the low-rise, single-family dwellings and farm buildings were severely damaged. Fortunately, none of the residential buildings collapsed. This is mainly because most houses in Iceland were made of concrete and well-built.
The government immediately sent a search team to search for victims under the rubble upon the happening of the earthquake.
I think that such damages could be minimized if people are educated about the damages earthquakes can cause so they will know how to react when an earthquake strikes. Also, the government should inform the people of an earthquake that is predicted to happen soon so the people can be better prepared.
